Early Morning Exercise Benefits!
When trying to keep fitness as a lifestyle, I personally think working out in the morning is the most efficient option, not to mention the most beneficial for your entire day! I’ve generally always preferred working out first thing in the morning and have noticed many of these benefits on my own, but it was interesting to read the scientific reasons that confirmed these positive changes affecting my body and mind! I’ve made a list of some of the most noticeable benefits I’ve experienced from early morning workouts, and some explanations for these awesome perks. :) Hopefully this inspires you to begin channeling your inner fitness early bird, or to keep the ball rollin’ if you already start your day this way!
1. Having a productive & healthy morning always sets the tone for everything else I do that day, including my eating habits!
Jasmin Theard, an exercise physiologist at Piedmont Atlanta Fitness Center explains that positive mental health benefits occur after morning workouts because “exercise leads to the secretion of neurotransmitters that promote mental clarity and an improved attention span...you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment, as well as rejuvenated and recharged”(piedmont.org, 1).
I personally feel much more motivated to continue making healthy choices throughout the day if I’ve already started the morning off on an active note. If I start the day off being lazy, I’ll usually be more likely to crave something unhealthy for breakfast, and from there will justify continuing this bad streak by telling myself the day is already ruined, so why not just start over tomorrow. It’s a vicious cycle that continues to go on unless I push myself to wake up and start the day with ANY sort of exercise. Doing this immediately shifts my mindset and prepares me for a productive and healthy day!
2. I fall asleep MUCH easier at night and feel more rested in the morning(so I can get right back into that morning workout).
There are some days when it's just not possible for me to workout in the morning, so I settle for an evening sweat sesh instead. Even though I still feel good after an evening workout, I always end up feeling restless and having a difficult time falling asleep if it’s too close to my bedtime. Since I always feel so rejuvenated after I exercise, I'd rather have that extra burst of energy during the day when I need to be productive, not when I'm trying to wind down and get some shut-eye!
3. I’ve begun to notice my muscle building much quicker; and as a result, have been losing more fat with my regular morning workouts.
According to Amanda Bireline from the National Institute for Fitness & Sport, this happens because “our testosterone levels are highest upon awakening...the more testosterone we have in our bodies while working out, the more efficient our bodies will be at muscle production” (Bireline 1). New research from Northumbria University shows that “people can burn up to 20% more body fat by exercising in the morning on an empty stomach”(Science Daily 1). This is a very convincing reason to get to that barre class or treadmill first, and nourish those hard working muscles with a nutritional breakfast second!
4. I’m able to be more consistent with my fitness, and generally have more self-confidence & a more positive outlook on my life!
This one doesn’t really need an explanation-- if you're feeling good about yourself, you're more likely to continue doing what is clearly giving you great results! I love how I feel inside and out when I'm sticking to a consistent morning exercise regimen; so naturally, I feel motivated to stick to it! I highly recommend incorporating early morning workouts into your lifestyle, it's worth getting up an extra hour early.. trust me! And if you're like me, your sleep will most likely even out when you're able to fall asleep right when you get to bed! :)
